English TV presenter and writer Gok Wan was BOTD in 1974. Born Kowkhyn Wan in Leicester to an English mother and a Hong-Kong Chinese father, he struggled with obesity for most of his childhood and adolescence. He studied drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, embarking on a crash diet to lose weight, eventually developing anorexia and severe depression. In 2006, he presented a reality TV show How to Good Look Naked, offering makeovers for people with poor body image and encouraging them to accept their bodies without drastic weight loss or plastic surgery. The show’s success led to further reality TV shows and documentaries on body image, obesity, eating disorders and teen suicide, though he was criticised by some commentators for objectifying overweight people. In 2011, he launched a womenswear collection for the Sainsbury’s supermarket chain, catering to plus-sized women. He has also presented TV shows on Chinese cookery, drawing from his childhood experiences working in his family’s restaurant. He has also appeared in Christmas pantomime, a brief stand-up comedy tour and works occasionally as a DJ. Openly gay since forever, his current relationship status is unknown.
