Australian actorErrol Flynn was BOTD in 1909. Born in Hobart, Tasmania to a middle-class family, he was expelled from a prestigious private school and spent his youth as a sailor and petty criminal. living between Sydney, London and New Guinea. In 1933, he was offered the role of Fletcher Christian in Australia’s first sound film In the Wake of the Bounty. He moved to London soon after to pursue his acting career, working as an extra in film and theatre. Offered a contract by Warner Brothers, he moved to Hollywood in 1935, shagging his way into bit parts in films. He became an overnight star in the historical action-adventure film Captain Blood, a role showcasing his good looks, athleticism and sexual charisma. His leading role in 1938’s The Adventures of Robin Hood made him a global superstar, pairing him with Olivia de Havilland who became his frequent screen partner. He also achieved success with The Charge of the Light Brigade and played Bette Davis‘ love interest in The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex. A statutory rape trial in 1942 badly damaged his career, though he made a successful comeback with The Adventures of Don Juan, Kim and the Ernest Hemingway adaptation The Sun Also Rises. Married three times and with four children, he was an infamous womaniser, having affairs with his co-stars Marlene Dietrich, Anita Ekberg, Hedy Lamarr, Ida Lupino, Linda Christian and Shelley Winters. His sexual interests included installing two-way mirrors in his Hollywood mansion to spy on his guests, and once stated that his gravestone would read “If It Moved, Flynn Fucked It.” (The expression “In Like Flynn” is also thought to refer to his sexual prowess). Flynn’s biographers Charles Higham and David Bret claimed that Flynn was bisexual and had affairs with his Captain Blood co-star Ross Alexander, Tyrone Power and Howard Hughes. A rampant alcoholic and drug addict, Flynn died in 1959 aged 50. Now considered one of Hollywood’s greatest sex symbols, he has been portrayed onscreen by Guy Pearce, Jude Law and Kevin Kline.
