American writer and historian Jonathan Ned Katz was BOTD in 1938. Born in New York City, he studied art at the New School and Hunter College. He is best known for the historical studies Homosexuality: Lesbians and Gay Men in Society, History and Literature, and Gay American History: Lesbians and Gay Men in the USA, which became seminal texts for the burgeoning gay studies movement. His 1990 essay The Invention of Heterosexuality was expanded into a 1995 book, in which he critiqued the 19th century construction of homo/heterosexuality, arguing that sexuality and gender is socially constructed. His 2001 book Love Stories: Sex Between Men Before Homosexuality focused on male same-sex relationships in the 19th century, controversially speculating that Abraham Lincoln may have had sexual experiences with men. Katz is the co-founder and editor of the gay history portal OutHistory.org. His biography of lesbian writer Eve Adams, The Daring Life and Dangerous Times of Eve Adams, was published in 2021.
