American filmmaker Rose Troche was BOTD in 1964. Born in Chicago to Puerto Rican parents, she studied filmmaking and art history at the University of Illinois. She made her directorial debut with the lesbian romance Go Fish, co-written with the film’s co-star (and Troche’s then-partner) Guinevere Turner. One of the highlights of the 1994 Sundance Festival, it established Troche as a central player in 1990s independent film. Her next feature, Bedrooms and Hallways, a cheerfully raunchy comedy about couples of all sexual persuasions, was followed by the less successful The Safety of Objects. In the 2000s, she transitioned to television, directing episodes of Six Feet Under, The L Word, Ugly Betty and South of Nowhere. In 2022, she made a return to feature filmmaking with the romantic comedy My Fake Boyfriend.
