English aristocrat Henry Rainald Gage, 6th Viscount Gage, was BOTD in 1895. Born in London, the son of Henry Charles Gage, the 5th Viscount Gage of Firle Place, he inherited the viscountcy in 1912, aged 16, after his father’s death. During World War One, he became a captain in the Coldstream Guards, serving on the front lines of battle in France and Belgium. After the war, he moved to London, living in a lavish home in Mayfair with his lover Henry “Chips” Channon, eventually joined by Channon’s other lover, Prince Paul of Yugoslavia. He went into politics, working as parliamentary private secretary to the Colonial Secretary of State for India, and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex in 1927. After his separation from Channon, he married Alexandra Imogen Grenfell, daughter of 1st Baron Desborough, with whom he had three children. During World War One, Firle Place was requisitioned by the British Army, and they moved to a smaller house in Lewes. After the war, Gage opened Firle House to public tours, presumably to offset capital gains taxes imposed by the post-war Labour government. After Grenfell’s death in 1968, Gage married Diana Cavendish in 1971, remaining together until his death in 1982, aged 86.
