American fashion designer Alexander Wang was BOTD in 1983. Born to Taiwanese parents in San Francisco, California, he studied fashion design at Central Saint Martins in London. He moved to New York City to continue his studies, but left after two years to launch his own fashion label, going into business with his mother and sister. His initial collections of predominantly black knitwear and women’s ready-to-wear collections won critical acclaim, and the approval of American Vogue editor Anna Wintour. In 2012, he was appointed creative director of Balenciaga, but left after three years, returning to his own label, specialising in androgynous casual wear and luxury bags and shoes. His designs have been worn worn by celebrities including Zoe Kravitz, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rihanna and an assortment of Kardashians. Openly gay since forever, he collaborated with condom manufacturers Trojan on a 2017 safe sex campaign named “Protect Your Wang”. In 2012, workers in Wang’s New York clothing factory sued him for US$50m, alleging they were forced to work in sweatshop conditions. Wang and the claimants settled out of court with an undisclosed financial settlement. He is also currently facing an series of sexual harassment allegations dating from 2017, effectively cancelling his career in fashion design.
