Puerto Rican singer-songwriter and actor Ricky Martin was BOTD in 1971. Born in San Juan to a middle-class family, he began appearing in television commercials when he was nine, and shot to stardom aged 12 as a member of Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. He began his solo career in 1991, releasing two studio albums. His 1995 album A Medio Vivir, featuring the hit single Maria, became internationally successful, boosted by Martin’s sizzling live performance at the 1999 Grammy Awards, vaulting him to global celebrity. His self-titled English language album was released the same year, featuring the compulsively danceable Livin’ la Vida Loca. He continued recording successfully throughout the 2000s, while also starring in American soap opera General Hospital. Dubbed “the King of Latin Pop”, Martin has sold over 70 million albums worldwide, and is credited with popularising Latin pop for non-Latin audiences. In 2018, he starred as Antonio d’Amico in Ryan Murphy‘s true crime TV series The Assassination of Gianni Versace. Martin has had relationships with men and women, and came out as gay in 2010, becoming a vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights. In 2022, Martin’s nephew Dennis Yadiel Sánchez accused Martin of sexual harassment following a brief affair, and successfully applied for a restraining order against him. Martin denied the allegations, and Sánchez later withdrew the restraining order. Martin married his partner Jwan Yosef in 2018, with whom he is raising four children.
