American journalist and activist Ronan Farrow was BOTD in 1987. Born in New York, the son of actress Mia Farrow and filmmaker Woody Allen, he studied philosophy at Bard College, graduating when he was 15, and later studied law at Yale University. He served as a UNICEF Spokesperson for Youth, making goodwill trips to the Sudan with his mother, and worked as Special Adviser for Humanitarian and NGO Affairs during the Obama administration. In 2011, he was appointed by then-Secretary of State as Special Adviser for Global Youth Issues. After completing a doctorate in political science at Oxford University, he became a journalist, writing for The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times, and hosted several investigative reports for television. He is best known for his writing and advocacy for victims of sexual abuse. In 2016, he published an article in The Hollywood Reporter critiquing the lack of journalistic inquiry into sexual abuse allegations against Allen and Bill Cosby, publicly supporting his half-sister Dylan’s accusations that Allen had abused her. The following year, The New Yorker published his investigative report into sexual misconduct claims against film producer Harvey Weinstein. The article, published days after Jodi Cantor and Meghan Twohey’s investigation on Weinstein for The New York Times, won Farrow, Cantor and Twohey the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. He has published further reports on alleged harassment by New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, TV executive Leslie Moonves and Supreme Court judge-nominee Brett Kavanaugh. In 2021, he also reported about the abusive treatment of pop star Britney Spears by her father under the terms of a court conservatorship. Farrow came out as gay in 2018, was in a long-term relationship with journalist and political aide Jon Lovett until 2023. He is estranged from Allen, and has refused to respond to rumours that his biological father is actually Frank Sinatra (despite their remarkable physical similarity).
