American singer-songwriter Billie Eilish was BOTD in 2001. Born in Los Angeles, California, she and her brother Finneas O’Connell were home-schooled by their parents. Both showed early talents in music, writing songs together and performing in the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus. She rose to public attention with her debut single Ocean Eyes, written by O’Connell and self-released on SoundCloud. The EP Don’t Smile at Me was released in 2017, achieving worldwide commercial success. Eilish’s 2019 debut studio album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, co-written with O’Connell, became one of the year’s bestselling albums, topping the US Billboard 200 chart and winning Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. The single Bad Guy also reached No 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100, winning Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Eilish and O’Connell co-wrote the song No Time to Die for the 2021 James Bond film of the same name, winning an Oscar for best original song. Eilish’s second studio album, Happier Than Ever, was released in 2021 to worldwide success, and was nominated for seven Grammy Awards. In 2023, she and O’Connell co-wrote the song What Was I Made For? for the soundtrack of the film Barbie, winning a Grammy for Song of the Year and a second Oscar. Her third album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, was released in 2024, featuring the lesbian-themed single Lunch. Known for her grungy, androgynous dress sense, blue hair, Gothic make-up and permanently sullen expression, Eilish has been a vocal advocate for fashionable Gen Z causes including climate change awareness, women’s reproductive rights, wildlife preservation, veganism and trans rights. Openly bisexual, her acknowledged relationships have, to date, been with men, including rapper 7:AMP and musicians Matthew Tyler Vorce and Jesse Rutherford. In 2024, she delighted her queer fans after stating in an interview, “I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand, until, last year, I realised I wanted my face in a vagina“. She later regretted her comments, stating “I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or anything about my dating life. Ever, ever, ever. And I hope that they never will again. And I’m never talking about my sexuality ever again. And I’m never talking about who I’m dating ever again“. Her current relationship status is perhaps thankfully, unknown.
