American poet Eileen Myles was BOTD in 1949. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they were educated at the University of Massachusetts-Boson. They moved to New York in 1974, befriending poets Allen Ginsberg and James Schuyler, and starting a long association with the St Mark’s Poetry Project. In 1992, they launched a write-in campaign for the US Presidency, in protest at the conservative policies of George Bush Sr, inspiring Zoe Leonard’s poem I want a dyke for President. The author of over 20 works of poetry and fiction, they performed live with fellow post-punk writers Jim Carroll, Kathy Acker, Chris Kraus and Dennis Cooper. In 2002, they moved to California to teach creative writing at the University of California in San Diego, followed by residencies at Bard College, Naropa University, Washington University in St Louis, Columbia Univeristy School of the Arts and New York University. In 2016, they published MOMENTUM in support of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Myles’ career and public profile received an expected boost via their relationship with Joey Soloway, creator of trans-themed TV drama Transparent, who plundered their affair for a plot line and cast Myles in a cameo role. The two separated soon after, apparently on amicable terms. Myles lives between New York and Marfa, Texas. Their current relationship status is unknown.
