English comedian and actor Stephen K. Amos was BOTD in 1967. Born in London to Nigerian immigrant parents, he studied law at the University of Westminster before becoming a stand-up comic, appearing at The Comedy Store and making his debut at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2001. He came to wider public attention with his comedy show The Feelgood Factor, performing to sold-out audiences in Britain and Australasia. After the homophobic murder of a friend in 2006, he began publicly acknowledging his own homosexuality in his stand-up routines. He has appeared on radio and TV comedy shows including Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week, QI and The Wright Stuff. In 2007, he wrote and hosted TV documentaries Batty Man examining homophobia in the Black British community, and Penis Envy, exploring men’s insecurities about penis size. (Referring to his own endowment, he quipped “Some stereotypes I can live with!‘) In his 2019 documentary Pilgrimage, he walked the pilgrimage route Via Francigena and interviewed Pope Francis, telling him “As a a gay man, I don’t feel accepted“. An occasional actor in theatre, film and television, he appeared as Alfie Doolittle in the 2022 London revival of Lerner & Loewe‘s musical My Fair Lady.
