American actress Mary Martin was BOTD in 1913. Born in Weatherford, Texas, she showed an early talent for performance, and began singing as professionally as a child. Married at 17, she gave birth to a son (future Dallas actor Larry Hagman) but was divorced within five years. After opening a dance school in Texas, she moved to Hollywood, where she performed in radio dramas. She made her Broadway debut in 1938 in Cole Porter’s musical Leave It to Me!, becoming nationally famous for her rendition of My Heart Belongs to Daddy, which she performed on film in the film Night and Day. She is best known for her long association with Richard Rogers & Oscar Hammerstein, originating leading roles in the Broadway stage productions of South Pacific and The Sound of Music, though was replaced in their film adaptations by Mitzi Gaynor and Julie Andrews respectively. She also had success in the 1954 Broadway production of Peter Pan, for which she won a Tony Award, and appearing in a live TV performance. In 1940, she married drama critic and producer Richard Halliday, remaining together until his death in 1973. Discreetly bisexual, she had a long-term relationship with fellow actress Janet Gaynor, frequently vacationing in Brazil through the 1950s and 1960s, and was jokingly referred by friends as Gaynor’s wife. She died in 1990, aged 76.
