American actor and playwright Colman Domingo was BOTD in 1969. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he studied journalism before moving to Los Angeles, California, where he worked primarily in theatre. He made his Broadway debut in the 2008 rock musical Passing Strange, reprising his role for the film version directed by Spike Lee. In 2010, he wrote and starred in the autobiographical play A Boy and His Soul, and was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the musical The Scotsboro Boys, reprising the role in London. He made vivid supporting appearances in the Abraham Lincoln biopic Lincoln, Black civil rights drama Selma, a celebrated adaptation of James Baldwin‘s novel If Beale Street Could Talk and the film of August Wilson’s play Ma Rainey‘s Black Bottom. He is became more wildly known for his appearances in TV series Fear the Walking Dead, and as a recovering drug addict in Euphoria, for which he won an Emmy Award. In 2024, he starred as openly gay civil rights activist Bayard Rustin in George C. Wolfe’s biopic Rustin, earning an Oscar nomination. Openly gay since forever, he married his long-term partner Raúl Domingo in 2014.
