American singer-songwriter Miley Cyrus was BOTD in 1992. Born in Franklin, Tennessee, the daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus, her godmother was family friend Dolly Parton. She was raised in Canada before moving to Los Angeles, becoming a child star in Hannah Montana, a Disney TV sitcom about a schoolgirl living a secret double life as a pop star. After several successful music albums released under the Hannah Montana franchise, she released her first adult pop-rock album Meet Miley Cyrus in 2007. In her 2008 album Breakout, she presented a more adult image, with a husky androgynous singing style and lyrics dealing candidly with sexuality. She enraged her fans after appearing semi-nude on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in a portrait by Annie Leibowitz, in an image reminiscent of child pornography. Her 2013 album Bangers became a worldwide hit, featuring the No 1 single Wrecking Ball, accompanied by a provocative music video in which she gyrated nude on a wrecking ball and fellated a sledgehammer. Her 2020 album Plastic Hearts debuted at No 2 on the Billboard 200, receiving praise for its shift towards synth-pop and glam rock. Cyrus has identified variously as pansexual and queer, and has been a prominent supporter of LGBTQ rights, co-founding the Happy Hippie Foundation in 2014 to provide support for homeless queer youth. Her well-publicised dating history includes relationships with Tyler Posey, Dylan Sprouse, Nick Jonas and Justin Gaston. She married Australian actor Liam Hemsworth in 2016, separating three years later. Post-Hemsworth, she was briefly involved with Kaitlynn Carter and Cody Simpson. She has been in a relationship with musician Maxx Morando since 2019, infuriating many of her queer fans by stating “You don’t have to be gay, there are good people with d*cks out there – you’ve just got to find them.” Her most recent album Something Beautiful was released in 2025.
