New Zealand journalist and writer Douglas Lloyd Jenkins was BOTD in 1963. Born in Auckland, he studied at the University of Auckland before studying furniture design at Carrington Polytechnic. After graduating, he worked as a furniture designer, and later became a lecturer at the Unitec School of Design. He became more widely known as a journalist and columnist for The New Zealand Herald, the New Zealand Listener and local architectural magazines, and as co-presenter of the 2001 TV series The Big Art Trip. His 2005 book At Home: A Century of New Zealand Design won the Montana Book Award for non-fiction and was made into an eight-part TV series. In 2006, he became director of the Hawke’s Bay Museum & Art Gallery, promoting the work of New Zealand artists Christopher Perkins, Dick Frizzell and Philip Clairmont. He resigned in 2014 to become a full-time writer, publishing Beach Life: A celebration of New Zealand Beach Culture in 2016. Lloyd Jenkins was in a relationship with writer Peter Wells for 28 years, marrying in 2019, shortly before Wells’ death from cancer. In 2022, Lloyd Jenkins published his debut novel Shelter, a gay-themed narrative set in Auckland. His current relationship status is unknown.
