English actor Nickolas Grace was BOTD in 1947. Born in West Kirby, Wirral, he was educated at private schools, moving to London to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama. After working in regional repertory theatre, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing alongside Judi Dench in a celebrated production of The Comedy of Errors. He became an overnight star as the stammering, mascara-wearing homosexual Anthony Blanche in the 1981 TV adaptation of Evelyn Waugh‘s Brideshead Revisited. In 1984, he played the villainous Sheriff of Nottingham in the 1984 TV series Robin of Sherwood. His remaining career was spent in theatre and television, with occasional film appearances in James Ivory‘s Heat and Dust, Ken Russell‘s Oscar Wilde biopic Salome’s Last Dance, and a 1999 film of Wilde’s play An Ideal Husband. His recent work includes a 2017 TV serialisation of Waugh’s novel Decline and Fall, and the spy drama Killing Eve. Openly gay since forever, he had a discreet relationships with closeted actor Alan Bates in the 1970s. His current relationship status is unknown.
