American actress, model and writer Hari Nef was BOTD in 1992. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to a middle-class Jewish family, she was assigned male at birth. After her parents’ divorce, she was raised by her mother in Newton, Massachusetts, moving to New York in her teens to study theatre at Columbia University. In 2015, she appeared in the second season of Joey Soloway‘s trans-themed TV series Transparent, playing a trans woman living in Weimar Republic-era Berlin. The following year, she became the first openly transgender woman signed to an American modelling agency, later appearing on the cover of Elle magazine. Her other screen credits include the films Assassination Nation, 1Up and Barbie, and the TV series You and The Idol, and she is slated to star in an upcoming biopic of Warhol Superstar Candy Darling. She has written opinion pieces and celebrity profiles for The New York Times, Artforum, Dazed and Vice and wrote a regular sex advice column for Adult magazine. Nef lives in New York City with her partner, the writer and editor Ludwig Hurtado.
