American actress Cherry Jones was BOTD in 1956. Born in Paris, Tennessee, she studied drama at Carnegie Mellon School of Drama in Pittsburgh. After graduating, she co-founded the American Repertory Theatre, and made her Broadway debut in the 1987 musical Stepping Out. She rose to wider attention in Paula Vogel‘s 1992 Obie Award-winning off-Broadway play The Baltimore Waltz, co-starring Joe Mantello. The following year, she joined appeared with Mantello in the original Broadway production of Tony Kushner’s award-winning play Angels in America. She won a Tony Award for a celebrated 1995 Broadway revival of The Heiress, based on Henry James‘ novel Washington Square. In 2005, she originated the role of Sister Aloysius in John Patrick Shanley’s play Doubt, winning her second Tony Award. She led a 2014 Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams‘ The Glass Menagerie, reprising the role successfully in the West End. She has also worked extensively in television, including The West Wing, 24, The Handmaid’s Tale andSuccession. She came out onscreen in Joey Soloway‘s trans-themed drama Transparent, playing a carnivorous lesbian academic, based on feminist poet Eileen Myles. Jones was in an 18-year relationship with Mary O’Connor, and had a high-profile five-year relationship with her Glass Menagerie co-star Sarah Paulson. She married her long-term partner, filmmaker Sophie Huber in 2015.
