American actress Tatum O’Neal was BOTD in 1963. Born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of actor Ryan O’Neal, she became a celebrity aged ten when she starred with her father in the 1973 crime caper Paper Moon. Her role as a cigar-smoking child con artist won her an Oscar, making her the youngest-ever winner of the prize. Her subsequent performances in The Bad News Bears, Nickelodean, International Velvet and Little Darlings were less well-received, leading to a long hiatus from acting. She married tennis star John McEnroe in 1986, with whom she had three children. Their turbulent relationship, divorce and O’Neal’s problems with drug dependency became tabloid fodder, resulting in McEnroe being awarded sole custody of their children. She made a minor comeback in the 2000s with appearances in TV series Sex and the City, Wicked Wicked Games and Rescue Me, and occasional appearances in independent films. In her 2004 memoir A Paper Life, she described her addiction to heroin, and alleged that she was sexually molested by her father’s drug dealer when she was 12. She also accused her father of physical and emotional abuse, which he publicly denied. A second memoir, Found: A Daughter’s Journey Home, followed in 2011. In 2015, she announced that she was dating women, describing her sexuality as “not one or the other”. She suffered a stroke in 2020 caused by an overdose of prescription medication, leaving her in a coma and losing the ability to speak, followed by a long rehabilitation process. Her current relationship status is unknown.
