German singer and cabaret performer Claire Waldoff was BOTD in 1884. Born in the Gelsenkirchen to a working-class family, she trained as an actress, moving to Berlin in 1906. She became one of the most well-known cabaret stars of the Weimar Republic era, typically performing in a man’s suit with cropped hair, smoking cigarettes, swearing onstage and singing songs with queer subtext. From 1924, she performed at Berlin’s most popular variety theatres, performing with the young Marlene Dietrich (who later copied her androgynous appearance for the film Morocco) and recording a number of her most popular songs. Openly lesbian since forever, she lived with her partner Olga “Olly” von Roeder from the mid-1920s until her death. As the Nazis came to power, Waldoff was banned from performing, and viewed with suspicion by Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels for contravening gender norms. In 1939, Waldoff and von Rowdier left Berlin and retired to Bavaria, performing occasionally in troop entertainment shows. She died in 1957, aged 72.
