English singer-songwriter and actor Cliff Richard was BOTD in 1940. Born Harry Webb to English parents in British-controlled India, his family returned to England in 1948 following Indian independence. He was raised in London, playing in skiffle bands in his teens. In the 1950s, he became the lead singer of soft-rock band the Shadows, scoring a hit in 1959 with the saccharine pop song Living Doll. Marketed as a wholesome, parent-friendly alternative to the highly sexualised Elvis Presley, he appeared in a series of G-rated musical films in the 1960s, including The Young Ones, Summer Holiday and Wonderful Life. Perhaps thankfully, his career as a teen idol came to an abrupt end with the arrival of The Beatles. After becoming a born-again Christian in 1965, he re-emerged with a softer pop-rock sound, becoming a frequent contestant in the Eurovision Song Quest and hosting his own TV variety show. In 1976, he made an alarming comeback as a rock star, scoring hits with Devil Woman (his first song to receive significant airplay in the United States) and the ballad We Don’t Talk Anymore. He roller-skated into the 1980s with the hit song Wired For Sound, a bizarre re-recording of Living Doll with alternative comedy troupe The Young Ones, and a bestselling recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s song All I Ask of You from the musical The Phantom of the Opera, duetting with Sarah Brightman. In 1988, aged 48, he held the UK No 1 position for his compilation album Private Collection and his Christmas single Mistletoe and Wine. Innumerable albums, Christmas singles and sold-out tours followed, including a 2008 reunion tour with The Shadows. To date, Richard has sold 250 million records worldwide, making him the third-highest selling artist in UK singles chart history, behind The Beatles and Presley. A lifelong bachelor, he has claimed to have a series of abortive relationships with women, and has consistently denied rumours of being a closeted gay man. In 2016, he was investigated in relation to historical allegations of sexual abuse made by four men, but was never charged, later extracting an apology and damages from the police force and the BBC for defamation. He has similarly denied having plastic surgery, crediting his youthful appearance to clean living, regular exercise and imbibing Royal Bee Jelly. He now lives in Barbados, where he was granted honorary citizenship, and continues to record and release albums.
