American actor Matt Bomer was BOTD in 1977. Born in Webster Groves, Missouri, he studied acting and made his television debut on soap operas All My Children and Guiding Light. After a series of bit parts in film and TV series (including a horny gay dance instructor in Alan Ball‘s TV series Six Feet Under), he rose to fame as the star of TV police series White Collar and as a stripper in Steven Soderbergh’s film Magic Mike. He transitioned to serious drama as a gay man dying of AIDS in a TV film of Larry Kramer‘s play The Normal Heart, winning a Golden Globe and widespread praise for his extreme weight loss. His profile rose with roles in two seasons of Ryan Murphy‘s anthology TV drama series American Horror Story, though he was criticised for portraying a transgender sex worker in 2017 indie film Anything. He appeared in the 2018 Broadway revival of Mart Crowley’s play The Boys in the Band, later reprising his role in the 2020 TV film. In 2023, he co-starred with Jonathan Bailey as closeted lovers in the TV drama series Fellow Travellers, based on Thomas Mallon’s novel. He also directed an episode of Murphy’s true-crime drama The Assassination of Gianni Versace and narrated the documentary Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia. Bomer publicly came out as gay in 2012. He has been married to Simon Halls since 2011, with whom he has three children via a surrogate.
