American singer-songwriter St. Vincent was BOTD in 1982. Born Annie Clark in Tulsa Oklahoma, she was raised in Dallas, Texas, spending her teens as a roadie for her uncle and aunt, the guitar-vocal jazz duo Tuck & Patti. She attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, dropping out to join choral rock band The Polyphonic Spree. In 2006, she joined musician Sufjan Stevens’ touring band, with whom she still regularly performs. She released her debut studio album Marry Me in 2007, an eccentric blend of art rock and baroque pop utilising synthesisers, organ, clavieta, xylophone, vibraphone and dulcimer. Compared favourably to her pop heroes Kate Bush and David Bowie, she released three albums over the next five years, including 2012’s The Giant, a collaboration with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne. Her breakout success came with her 2014 self-titled album, which won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Her 2016 album Masseducation debuted at No 10 on the Billboard 100, and its eponymous single won the Grammy for Best Rock Song. Her album Daddy’s Home, released in 2017, was inspired by her father’s imprisonment for embezzlement, again winning the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Her latest album All Born Screaming was released in 2024, winning three Grammys. She identifies as queer and gender fluid, and has been in relationships with Carrie Brownstein, Kristen Stewart and Cara Delevingne. While accepting a Grammy Award in 2025, she revealed that she is married to a woman, with whom she is raising a daughter.
