Irish fashion designer Jonathan Anderson was BOTD in 1984. Born in Mafherafelt, County Derry in Northern Ireland, he grew up during a period of civil unrest between the Irish Republican Army and British loyalist forces. Diagnosed with dyslexia as a student, he moved to Washington, D.C. to study acting at the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. While a student, he developed an interest in costume design, and returned to Ireland, settling in Dublin where he worked for a department store. He moved to London to study at the London College of Fashion, after which he worked for Prada. He launched his first menswear collection in 2008 to critical acclaim, later developing a successful spin-off range for the high street menswear chain Topshop. In 2013, Donatella Versace appointed him as creative director of Versace‘s satellite brand Versus. Later that year, he was appointed creative director for Spanish fashion house Loewe. He quickly turned boosted Loewe’s popularity with androgynous fashions well-matched to the Gen Z genderqueer sensibilities, an advertising campaign featuring Daniel Levy witting playing on the brand’s frequently-mispronounced name, celebrity endorsements including pop singer Rihanna, Josh O’Connor, Beyoncé and Dame Maggie Smith, and costume designs for Luca Guadagnino‘s films Challengers and Queer. In 2025, he became creative director of Dior womenswear and couture collections. Openly gay since forever, he is in a relationship with Spanish artist Pol Anglada.
