American writer and activist Leslie Feinberg was BOTD in 1949. Born in Kansas City, Missouri and raised in Buffalo, New York, she began frequenting gay bars in her teens, identifying as a butch lesbian. She joined the Workers World Party in her 20s, becoming the editor of the Workers World newspaper, and was involved in anti-war, anti-racist and pro-labour demonstrations throughout the 1970s and 80s. She was also involved in early protests about the US government’s mishandling of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Her first novel, Stone Butch Blues won the 1993 Lambda Literary Award, followed by Drag King Dreams in 2006. She wrote extensively about queer and transgender identity, notably in Transgender Liberation and Transgender Warriors, which were instrumental in bringing trans issues, terminology and pronoun usage to a mainstream audience. Feinberg married her long-term partner Minnie Bruce Pratt in 2011. She died in 2014, following a long battle with Lyme disease. In 2019, she was inducted into the National LGBTQ Wall of Honor at the Stonewall Memorial in New York City.
