Anglo-Canadian actress Kim Cattrall was BOTD in 1956. Born in Liverpool, England, her family emigrated to Canada when she was a baby, settling in Courtenay, British Columbia. At 16, she moved to New York City to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After graduating, she signed a five-year film deal with Otto Preminger, appearing in. his 1975 film Rosebud. Her contract was subsequently sold to Universal Studios, making her one of the last film actors to work under the studio contract system. A forgettable career followed, with sexy blonde/girlfriend roles in 1980s sex comedies Porkies and Police Academy and the action film Big Trouble in Little China. Her first lead role in the 1987 comedy Mannequin, in which she played a department store mannequin possessed by the spirit of an unusually horny Egyptian princess, was a commercial success, but did little to advance her career. She is best known for playing Samantha Jones, the man-eating cheerfully sex-positive Glamazon of 1990s TV comedy series Sex and the City, adapted by Darren Star from Candace Bushnell’s novel. Though intended as a vehicle for its star Sarah Jessica Parker, Cattrall became the show’s breakout success, earning a Golden Globe award, multiple Emmy nominations and enduring gay icon status. Cattrall later admitted in interviews that her success provoked jealousy from Parker and her cast-mates, and that contrary to appearances, they were never friends. She remained with the series for all six seasons, returning as Samantha for two terrible (but financially successful) SATC films, before announcing her retirement from the role. Post-SATC, she has worked primarily in television, starring in and executive-producing the Canadian TV comedy series Sensitive Skin, and co-starring in Tell Me a Story, How I Met Your Father and a poorly-received reboot of the queer TV drama series Queer as Folk. A long-term resident of London, she has appeared in successful West End productions of Brian Clark’s play Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Shakespeare‘s Antony and Cleopatra, Noël Coward‘s Private Lives and Tennessee WilliamsSweet Bird of Youth. In 2021, she was the only SATC cast member not to appear in the reboot And Just Like That…., a decision that proved sound when the series opened to negative reviews. She delighted fans with a two-minute cameo in the second series, for which one hopes she was paid handsomely. Cattrall has been married three times, and briefly dated Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in the early 1980s. In 2025, she married her long-term partner, journalist Russell Thomas.
