English actor Nigel Terry was BOTD in 1945. Born in Bristol, he was raised in Truro in Cornwall, becoming interested in theatre at an early age. After attending the National Youth Theatre, he studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. After graduating, he worked for the Oxford Meadow Players and the Bristol Old Vic, and made a striking film debut in 1968’s The Lion in Winter, opposite Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. He worked predominantly in theatre for the next 20 years, before his career was reignited playing King Arthur in the 1981 film Excalibur. He graduated to starring roles with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Court throughout the 1980s, and collaborated frequently with gay filmmaker Derek Jarman, playing the title role of the omnisexual artist in Caravaggio and appearing in The Last of England, War Requiem and Blue. His final major film role was in the 2004 swords-and-sandals epic Troy. He died in 2015, aged 62. A lifelong bachelor, little is known about his personal life, though his long association with Jarman has led to speculation that he may have been gay.
