American politician and fraudster George Santos was BOTD in 1988. Born in Jackson Heights, New York to Brazilian parents, he was raised by his mother after his parents’ divorce. After finishing high school, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 2008, claiming that his father was a high-paid executive in New York. He later claimed to have been involved in LGBTQ community events in Brazil, and reputedly performed in drag using the name Kitara Ravache. Returning to the United States in 2011, he worked for a hotel chain in Florida. By 2020, he was working for a Florida investment firm that was later accused of running a Ponzi scheme. A vocal supporter of President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, he launched his first Congressional campaign in 2020. Following his defeat, he refused to accept the election results, claiming (falsely) that vote totals had been manipulated and demanding a recount. He attended Trump’s Save America rally at Washington, D.C. on 6 January 2021, leading to a violent attack on the Capitol, though later denied being present. He launched a second Congressional campaign in 2022. Despite widespread concerns about his work record and business dealings, he was elected to Congress in 2023, becoming the first openly gay Republican to win a seat as a non-incumbent. Within weeks of his election, the New York Times reported that Santos had fabricated much of his biography. Among his many lies were his being descended from Ukrainian Jewish refugees, studying at Baruch College where he was a star volleyball player, working as a financier at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, owning a property investment portfolio in Manhattan and co-producing the ill-fated Broadway musical Spider-Man. He was later charged with 23 federal criminal charges, including defrauding donors, making false statements and falsifying records to the Federal Election Commission, aggravated identify theft and sexual harassment. In December, he was expelled from Congress. Days later, he started offering personalised videos on the website Cameo, and announced he would revive his Kitara drag persona to raise money for charity. In 2024, he pled guilty to identity theft and wire fraud, and was sentenced to 87 months in prison. In 2025, his sentence was commuted by President Trump, and he was released having served two years of sentence. He was married to a Brazilian woman for seven years, in what was believed to be another immigration arrangement, ending in divorce in 2019. He married Brazilian pharmacist Matheus Gerard in 2020.
