English comedian and TV presenter Joe Lycett was BOTD in 1988. Born in Hall Green, Birmingham to a middle-class family, he grew up in Solihull, and studied English and drama at the University of Manchester. His 2012 debut stand-up show Some Lycett Hot was nominated for Best Newcomer at the Edinburgh Comedy Awards, launching his professional career. He rose to public attention as a guest in TV comedy shows 8 Out of 10 Cats Countdown, Never Mind the Buzzcocks and QI. Initially appearing as a camp comic in the tradition of Julian Clary, he developed a series of routines about disputes over parking tickets and his encounters with internet scamsters. In 2019, he hosted the TV series Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back, combining consumer rights investigations with staged comedy pranks. In 2020, he changed his name by deed poll to Hugo Boss, to protest the fashion empire’s lawsuit against a Welsh brewing company for its use of the name “Boss”. He also examined cases against confidence tricksters, and established his own fake restaurant to highlight negligence by food delivery company Uber Eats. In 2021, he became the host of travel comedy programme Travel Man. His 2023 TV variety show Late Night Lycett debuted in 2023, winning him a BAFTA Television Award. In his 2024 programme Joe Lycett vs Poo, he investigated the pollution of public water supplies by water companies. Lycett describes himself as pansexual and bisexual, discussing the LGBTQ community’s mistrust of bisexuality in his comedy routines. In 2022, he criticised football star David Beckham for promoting the 2022 Qatar World Cup, citing the Qatari government’s poor LGBTQ human rights record. In 2024, he revealed he had a girlfriend, known only as Denise, with whom he has a son.
