American actor and Warhol Superstar Ondine was BOTD in 1937. Born Robert Olivo in New York City, little is known of his early life. In the 1960s, he became a member of Andy Warhol’s Factory in the 1960s, reputedly after meeting Warhol at an orgy. He collaborated on Andy Warhol’s Pop Art work and appeared in Warhol and Paul Morrissey’s films Batman Dracula, Couch, Raw Weekend and Chelsea Girls. He was also intriguingly cast as Ebenezer Scrooge in the Factory’s very weird version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In 1967’s The Loves of Ondine, he starred as a gay man attempting to go straight, memorably wrestling fellow Factory star Joe Dallesandro in the film’s finale. After being banned from the Factory for bad behaviour and drug use, he later starred in films made by his lover Roger Jacoby, including Dream Sphinx Opera, L’Amico Fried’s Glamorous Friends and Kunst Life. Ondine’s writings were later purloined by Warhol and published in the 1968 book a, A Novel. In later years, he supported himself by showing Warhol films and lecturing on his life as a Warhol superstar. He died of an AIDS-related illness in 1989, aged 52. He was portrayed by Michael Imperioli in the 1996 Valerie Solanas biopic I Shot Andy Warhol.
