American actress Gina Gershon was BOTD in 1962. Born in Los Angeles, California to a middle-class family, she was raised in the San Fernando Valley. She attended Beverley Hills High School and began acting professionally at 14, before studying drama at New York University. After appearing in rock group The Cars’ 1984 music video Hello Again alongside Andy Warhol, she made her big screen debut in John Hughes’ 1986 high school comedy Pretty in Pink. In 1988, she convincingly played Tom Cruise‘s heterosexual love interest in Cocktail, accidentally kneeing him in the nose while filming their sex scene. She became better known with a recurring role as a brothel madam in TV soap opera Melrose Place, and attracted a substantial lesbian fanbase with starring roles as butch lesbian Corky in Lana and Lilly Wachowski‘s film noir pastiche Bound, and as the amoral (and bisexual) Las Vegas showgirl Crystal Connor in Paul Verhoeven’s camp titty-fest Showgirls. Her other work includes the films Face/Off and Killer Joe and appearances in the TV series Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ugly Betty and Glee. In recent years, she starred in Broadway revivals of John Kander and Fred Ebb‘s musical Cabaret and the farce Boeing Boeing. Gershon has never married or had children, and was in a long-term relationship with athlete Robert Dekeyser until 2018. In 2008, she threatened to sue Vanity Fair magazine for inferring that she had “an inappropriate sexual relationship” with President Bill Clinton. She earns Honorary SuperGay status for helping many a bi-curious straight girl access their inner lesbian.
