Camille Cabral

Brazilian-French physician, politician and activist Camille Cabral was BOTD in 1944. Born on a farm near Cabaceiras, she was assigned male at birth. She studied medicine at Recife in Pernambuco, graduating in 1970, before moving to São Paulo to complete an internship at the Hospital das Clínicas. While in São Paulo, she began presenting publicly as a woman. In 1980, she moved to France to work as a dermatologist at the Saint-Louis Hospital in Paris, eventually taking French citizenship. She became heavily involved in trans activism and human rights campaigns, founding Prévention action santé travail pour les transgenres (Prevention, Action, Health, Work for Transgenders). She also became involved with the sex workers’ union Syndicat du travail sexuel and co-founded the Red Light Cooperative to support sex workers, helping organise the “Pute Pride”, a pride march for Paris’ sex workers. In 2001, she was elected as a district councillor in Paris’ 17th arrondisement, becoming the first transgender person in France to be an elected official, holding the post for seven years. She also stood as a Green Party candidate in the 2002 and 2007 French legislative elections. She lives in Paris. Like most French public figures, little is known about her personal life, and her relationship status is unknown.
