David Miranda

Brazilian activist and politician David Miranda was BOTD in 1985. Born into poverty in Rio de Janeiro, he was orphaned aged five and left school at 14, working a series of menial jobs. In 2005 he met the American journalist Glenn Greenwald at Ipanema Beach, moving in together after a week and marrying later that year. Greenwald encouraged Miranda to complete his education, and he graduated from Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing in 2014. He became heavily involved with Greenwald’s activist work, leading a campaign for the Brazilian government to grant political asylum to whistleblower Edward Snowden, and helping publish Snowden’s leaks detailing mass surveillance by the US National Security Agency. In 2013, he was detained at London’s Heathrow Airport and forced to hand over sensitive documents relating to Greenwald’s reporting. His detention drew widespread criticism by civil liberties groups. In 2016, Miranda became the first gay male councillor in Rio de Janeiro, elected on an LGBTQ rights and equality platform. He was elected a Federal Congressman in 2019, becoming a prominent critic of President Bolsonaro and the target of multiple death threats. He died on 9 May 2023, one day short of his 38th birthday, following a prolonged illness. He is survived by Greenwald and their two adopted sons.
