English actor Tim Curry was BOTD in 1946. Born in Grappenhall, Cheshire to a naval family, he was raised in Plymouth, attending private boarding schools in London and Bath. After studying acting at the University of Birmingham, he began his stage career in the original West End production of Hair. He is best known for originating the role of Dr Frank-n-Furter, the voraciously omnisexual transvestite in Richard O’Brien’s camp rock musical The Rocky Horror Show. The 1975 film version, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, made him an international star. His appearance as Frank-n-Furter, featuring Mae West lipstick, bodice and fishnet stockings became iconic, influencing generations of performers including Madonna, Lady Gaga, Jake Shears and Billy Porter. Curry went on to play smirking villains a with a generous dose of camp in stage productions of Amadeus, Travesties and Spamalot and appeared in the films Annie, Clue, Home Alone 2, The Three Musketeers and Charlie’s Angels. He was terrifying as the murderous clown Pennywise in a 1990 TV adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel It, significantly reducing demand for children’s birthday party clowns. He suffered a stroke in 2012, leaving him wheelchair bound, though he undertook voice work in animated films and audiobook recordings throughout the 2010s. He participated in a live table reading of The Rocky Horror Show in 2020 to raise funds for Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Curry has never married or had children, and playfully refuses to confirm or deny rumours about his sexuality. His memoir, titled Vagabond, is scheduled for release in late 2025.
