American actor Dick Sargent was BOTD in 1930. Born in California to an acting family, he started his career in 1950s Hollywood, with supporting roles in the films Prisoner of War, Bernadine and Operation Petticoat. He found greater success on television, and became a household name after taking over the role of Darrin Stephens, the hamstrung husband of a suburban witch in 1960s sitcom Bewitched, co-starring Elizabeth Montgomery and Agnes Moorehead. The show’s camp sensibility made it a favourite with gay audiences – notably Darrin as the hapless target of Moorehead’s drag-queenish jibes – becoming part of the queer canon of pre-Stonewall America. Sargent came out as gay in 1991, jokingly referring to himself as a “retroactive role model”, but also expressing his concern at the high rates of suicide among LGBTQ teens. The following year, he and Montgomery were Grand Marshals of the Los Angeles Gay Pride Parade. He died in 1994 aged 64, survived by his partner Albert Williams.
