Danish filmmaker Lasse Neilsen was BOTD in 1950. Born in Copenhagen, he studied filmmaking at the Danish Film School. His 1975 debut feature film La’ os være (Leave Us Alone), a Lord of the Flies-style drama about schoolchildren fending for themselves at a deserted campsite. He rose to prominence with his 1978 film Du er ikke alene (You Are Not Alone), a portrait of two teenage boys who fall in love at boarding school, winning prizes at the Berlinale and other international film festivals. His remaining career was spent making short films, including three gay coming-of-age tales set in Thailand. He died in 2024, aged 74.
