Scottish actor James McArdle was BOTD in 1989. Born in Glasgow, he attended the PACE Theatre Company in Paisley, before being accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He left before graduation to pursue a professional career, working at the Globe, the Royal Court Theatre and the National Theatre. In 2015, he stared in Chekhov’s Platanov at the Chicester Festival Theatre, winning him the prestigious Ian Charleson Award. He co-starred in the National Theatre’s 2017 revival of Tony Kushner‘s AIDS-themed drama Angels in America, for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award, staying with the production for its successful Broadway transfer. He transitioned to television, appearing in drama series Mare of Easttown, Life After Life, the gay romance Man In An Orange Shirt (scripted by Patrick Gale) and Playing Nice. His film appearances include Francis Lee‘s lesbian-themed film Ammonite, and Four Mothers, in which he played a gay man caring for his elderly mother. Despite his penchant for playing gay characters, McArdle has never spoken publicly about his sexual orientation or relationship status. We at SuperGays Headquarters hope an announcement is forthcoming soon.
