Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal was BOTD in 1975. Born José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal in Santiago, Chile, his family was descended from Castilian-Basque aristocracy and related to Chilean President Salvador Allende. After the overthrow of Allende’s government in 1977, Pascal’s parents were branded enemies of the state by the Pinochet dictatorship. Pascal and his family applied for political asylum in Denmark, eventually settling in San Antonio, Texas. He studied acting in California before moving to New York to study at the Tisch School of the Arts. He worked primarily in theatre, taking small roles in TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NYPD Blue, The Good Wife and Nurse Jackie, and supported financially by friend Sarah Paulson during periods of unemployment. He rose to public attention in 2014 as the bisexual villain Oberyn Martell in the TV fantasy series Game of Thrones, followed by a starring role as drug enforcement agent Javier Peña in the Netflix series Narcos. After a series of forgettable roles in Hollywood films, he became famous playing a bounty hunter in the 2019 TV sci-fi series The Mandalorian. Later that year, he co-starred with Glenda Jackson in the Broadway revival of King Lear. In 2023, he played a reluctant father figure to Bella Ramsey in the post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us, earning him an Emmy nomination and cultural caché as a hot daddy. His recent film work includes playing a gay cowboy in Pedro Almodóvar’s short film Strange Way of Life, a Roman centurion in the homoerotically-charged Gladiator II, and voice work in the animated film The Wild Robot. A vocal advocate for LGBTQ rights, he is the brother of trans actress and activist Lux Pascal. Amusingly guarded about his personal life, he has neither confirmed nor denied rumours about his bisexuality, and his relationship status is unknown. We here at SuperGays Headquarters wish him well and hope an announcement is forthcoming soon.
