Canadian filmmaker and actor Xavier Dolan was BOTD in 1989. Born in Montreal, he began his career as a child actor. His 2009 debut feature film J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother) debuted at Cannes, winning three prizes and launching his international career. His 2014 film Mommy, another Freudian drama about a gay son and his mother, won the Jury Prize at Cannes and the César Award for Best Foreign Film. His next feature Juste la fin du monde (It’s Only the End of the World), an operatic melodrama about a dying playwright, premiered at the Cannes Festival. Though savaged by critics, the film went on to win the Grand Prix and Best Director at the Césars. He has also directed music videos, including Hello and Easy on Me for Adele.
