Australian actor Murray Bartlett was BOTD in 1971. Born in Sydney, he was raised in Perth, studying drama at John Curtin College of the Arts and the National Institute of Dramatic Art. He came to popular attention in soap opera Neighbours, before moving to the United States in 2000. He had a cameo appearance in Sex and the City and a recurring role in soap opera Guiding Light. He made his big break in Andrew Haigh‘s 2014 TV series Looking, playing a scene queen negotiating his 40s in San Francisco’s gay scene. He then played Michael “Mouse” Tolliver in the 2019 TV reboot of Tales of the City, based on Armistead Maupin’s novel series. He is best known for playing Armond, the unhinged resort manager in Mike White‘s 2021 TV series The White Lotus, who rims a male colleague and shits in a guest’s suitcase. The role earned him numerous industry nominations and awards, including an Emmy. In 2023, he starred as one half of a gay couple in a post-apocalyptic landscape in the TV series The Last of Us, earning widespread praise. He lives in Provincetown with his partner Matt.
