American performance artist Holly Hughes was BOTD in 1955. Born in Saginaw, Michigan, she studied at Kalamazoo College, before moving to New York in the late 1970s. She began writing and acting with a lesbian performance collective, writing a series of one-woman shows dealing humorously with lesbian sexuality, including Well of Horniness and Dress Suits to Hire. In 1990, she attracted attention when her funding from the National Endowment for the Arts was vetoed, prompting a national debate about censorship and homophobia in the arts. She is best known for her 1996 performance Clit Notes, in which she played herself at different ages, her mother and various lovers, with an accompanying book Clit Notes: A Sapphic Sampler, reviewing her life and career. Her recent performances include Not My President’s Day and Bad and Nasty, critiquing the presidency of Donald Trump. Hughes lives in Michigan, where she teaches at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design.
