American writer Pat (also Patrick) Califia was BOTD in 1954. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, he was raised in Utah in a Mormon household. Identifying as female from an early age, his parents had him admitted to a psychiatric hospital in his teens. Califia moved to California, studying at San Francisco State University, and came out as a lesbian, adopting the surname Califia after the female warrior Amazon. He joined the women’s liberation and lesbian separatist movement, but was rejected from both movements for his interest in sado-masochistic sex. During the 1970s, Califia co-founded the lesbian S&M organisation Samois, and wrote a sex advice column for gay leather magazine Drummer. He has published queer erotic fiction, including the 1988 story collection Macho Sluts, and a series of guides to BDSM practices, including Sapphistry: The Book of Lesbian Sexuality and The Lesbian S/M Safety Manual. Califia was in a long-term relationship with Matt Rice, a trans man, with whom he had a son. He now identifies as trans (and uses he/him pronouns) and has written extensively about his transition and experiences with hormone replacement therapy.
