Glenn Greenwald

American journalist, lawyer and activist Glenn Greenwald was BOTD in 1967. Born in New York, he was raised in Florida, becoming involved in local body politics while a teenager. He studied at George Washington University before studying law at New York University. He practised as a litigator before opening his own firm in 1996, specialising in constitutional law and civil rights. He wound down his practice in the 2000s to focus on political writing, launching his blog Unclaimed Territory and reporting for Salon, becoming a vocal opponent of the Bush administration and the Iraq War. In 2012 he became a columnist for the UK Guardian, and launched his own media organisation The Intercept with documentarian Laura Poitras and journalist Jeremy Scahill. He and Poitras are best known for their collaboration with Edward Snowden, who provided them with classified information about American and British government surveillance programmes. Greenwald’s articles for the Guardian won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service, and were featured in Poitras’ documentary Citizenfour. The resulting publicity made him a star of the left-wing, though he was rigorously attacked by the right-wing press and several conservative politicians called for his prosecution. Evidence was also unearthed about Greenwald’s former associations with a gay porn site (which Greenwald acknowledged) and his online persona as a dom top named DomMascHry31 (which he denied). A prominent critic of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, Greenwald published leaked conversations with Brazilian government officials to reveal a corruption case. Charged with cybercrimes in 2020, his case was dismissed in court. He later resigned from Intercept, claiming he had been prevented from reporting about President Joe Biden’s relationship with China, opting to self-publish his work on Substack. Greenwald has written several books criticising American politics and civil rights policies, including Securing Democracy, No Place to Hide and How Would a Patriot Act. He was in a long term relationship with David Miranda, whom he met on holiday in Brazil when Miranda was 19. They were married in 2005 and adopted three sons, working together on political and civil rights campaigns until Miranda’s death in 2023. Greenwald continues to live and work in Brazil. He was portrayed by Zachary Quinto in the 2015 film biopic Snowden.
