American actor and activist Chaz Bono was BOTD in 1969. Born in Los Angeles to musical superstars Cher and Sonny Bono, he was assigned female at birth and named Chastity. As a child, Bono appeared frequently on The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, and studied at the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Los Angles. At 18, Bono came out as a lesbian to his family, coming out publicly in a 1995 interview with The Advocate. Bono became a prominent LGBTQ activist, publishing Family Outing: A Guide to the Coming Out Process for Gays, Lesbians and their Families, detailing his mother’s initial discomfort with having a gay daughter. His follow-up memoir The End of Innocence discussed being outed by the tabloid press, a brief musical career and the death of his girlfriend Joan. In 2008, Bono underwent gender transition surgery, legally changing his gender in 2010, becoming one of the first openly trans public figures in American culture. His transition was chronicled in the 2011 documentary Becoming Chas. Bono appeared, as Chastity, in an episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ TV sitcom Ellen, and as Chaz in The Bold and the Beautiful, two seasons of American Horror Story and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Bono is in a relationship with Shara Blue Mathes.
