Australian actress and producer Rebel Wilson was BOTD in 1980. Born Melanie Bownds in Sydney, she studied drama at the Australian Theatre for Young People and completed a law degree at the University of New South Wales. After working in theatre, she came to public attention in TV comedies Pizza, The Wedge and Bogan Pride. She moved to the United States to pursue her career, making a splash in femme-ensemble comedies Bridesmaids, Bachelorette and the Pitch Perfect films. Her recent career has been erratic, scoring successes in the Nazi-themed comedy film Jojo Rabbit and the satirical rom-com Isn’t It Romantic, but misfiring in the heist comedy The Hustle (which she also produced) and the catastrophic film of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats. An advocate for plus-sized women and body positivity, she aroused hostility following her weight loss in 2020. She came out as gay on social media in 2022, quipping “I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince, but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess” and announced her relationship with Ramona Agruma, pre-empting an attempt by the Sydney Morning Herald to out her. Later that year, she announced the birth of her daughter via a surrogate. Wilson and Agruma married in 2024.
