Australian athlete Matthew (Matt) Mitcham was BOTD in 1988. Born in Brisbane, he began his sports career as a trampoline gymnast, representing Australia at the World Junior Championships. In the 2000s, he developed his diving career, representing Australia in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. He was the star of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, winning the gold medal in the 10 metre springboard event, achieving what was at the time the highest single-dive score in Olympic history. Mitcham came out as gay before the Olympics, making him the first openly gay athlete to win a gold medal. His subsequent career was marred by injuries and drug addiction. After failing to reach the finals for his events at the 2012 Olympics, he retired from competitive sport. He has since moved into show-business, performing a one-man cabaret show, appearing on British reality TV shows Celebrity Splash and Dancing With the Stars, modelling underwear and (to the delight of his gay fans) opening an OnlyFans account. In 2020 he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. He married long-term boyfriend and erotic masseur Luke Rutherford in 2020, divorcing in 2024. As of 2025, Mitcham lives in Vancouver, Canada, where he works as a cruise ship entertainment director.
