Welsh actor Karl Johnson was BOTD in 1948. He began his career at the National Theatre in London, also performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court Theatre and the Old Vic. He is best known for his collaborations with filmmaker Derek Jarman, appearing in Jubilee and The Tempest and playing the closeted gay philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in the experimental biopic Wittgenstein. He also appeared in the Joe Orton biopic Prick Up Your Ears, scripted by Alan Bennett, and portrayed queer photographer John Deakin in John Maybury‘s film Love Is the Devil: Study for a Portrait of Francis Bacon. He has also worked extensively with Mike Leigh, appearing in Mr Turner and Peterloo, and played a queer-coded doctor in Terence Davies’ 2011 adaptation of Terence Rattigan‘s play The Deep Blue Sea. His extensive television career includes appearances in Rome, Lark Rise to Candleford, Call the Midwife and King Lear. Openly gay since forever, he lives in London.
