American actor César Romero was BOTD in 1907. Born in New York to a wealthy family of Spanish and Cuban origin, he turned down college to become a ballroom dancer. He made his Broadway debut in 1927 in the musical Lady Do, where his height, good looks and suave dance moves caught the attention of Hollywood producers. He made his first film The Shadow Laughs in 1933 and became a star of swashbuckling historical epics, playing Latin lovers in The Devil is a Woman and Week-End in Havana and sultry villains in The Thin Man and Wee Willie Winkie. He was a renowned socialite, partying with Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Carmen Miranda, Lucille Ball and Ginger Rogers. A “confirmed bachelor”, his homosexuality was an open secret in Hollywood, and he had relationships with a number of actors including Tyrone Power. He made his last major film appearance as Spanish explorer Cortéz in the 1947 adventure film Captain from Castle, spending the remainder of his career on television, appearing in the TV series Schlitz Playhouse of Stars with Dolores del Río. He is perhaps best known as The Joker in the 1960s TV series Batman, making cameo appearances in Rawhide, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Fantasy Island, Falcon Crest and Murder, She Wrote. He also had a cameo as the comic villain in the 1960 heist film Ocean’s 11. After decades in the closet, he broke his silence over his sexuality in an interview with Bose Hadleigh, published in the 1996 book Hollywood Gays. Romero died in 1994, aged 86.
