New Zealand cabaret artist and filmmaker Terrance Lou, better known by his stage names Mika Haka or Mika X, was BOTD in 1962. Born in Timaru to Māori parents, he was adopted by a white family who renamed him Neil Gudsell. He came out as gay when he was 12, and left high school to work as a hairdresser and dancer. In the 1980s, he joined a touring Māori theatre company, and developed a cult following with his one man show, notably his rendition of the song I Have Loved Me a Man. He also appeared in television series Shark in the Park and played trans pioneer Carmen Rupe in the 1989 television biopic Carmen. In Jane Campion’s 1993 film The Piano, he played a takatāpui (queer) character who hits on Harvey Keitel. He has released five solo music albums, and continues to perform in cabaret and concert tours. In 2020, he wrote, directed and starred in the short film GURL about Rupe. In 2021, Mika was convicted of perverting the course of justice, after attempting to persuade a witness to drop charges of sexual abuse against New Zealand businessman James Wallace.
