English singer-songwriter and actor Harry Styles was BOTD in 1994. Born in Redditch, he was raised in Cheshire. His musical career began in 2010 as a contestant on television talent show The X Factor. After being eliminated from the solo competition, he was invited to form a band to compete in the group category. The resulting boy band, One Direction, became an international success, with five No 1 albums released between 2011 and 2015, selling 70 million records worldwide. Styles launched a solo music career in 2017. His self-titled debut album reached No 1 in the UK and US, becoming one of the bestselling albums of the year. His second album Fine Line was released in 2019, again reaching No 1 worldwide, and featured the hit single As It Was. He made his screening debut in 2017, appearing in Christopher Nolan’s wartime drama Dunkirk. In Michael Grandage‘s 2022 film My Policeman, he played a bisexual police officer in 1950s England who has concurrent relationships with his wife and boyfriend. Styles’ relationships to date have been with women, including Caroline Flack, Taylor Swift, Camille Rowe and his Don’t Worry Darling director Olivia Wilde. Like many Millennials, he is reluctant to label his sexual orientation, playing with gender roles by wearing dresses and pearl necklaces and modelling men’s and women’s clothing for Gucci. He has supported LGBTQ charities including Stonewall, and his fans have described his concerts as “safe spaces” for LGBTQ people, earning him queer ally and Honorary SuperGay status.
